Director’s Note
I get chills every time I listen to or read the lyrics to Alanis Morissette’s “You Learn” from her iconic 1995 album Jagged Little Pill:
You live, you learn
You love, you learn
You cry, you learn
You lose, you learn
You bleed, you learn
You scream, you learn
Wear it out (The way a three-year-old would do)
Melt it down (You're gonna have to eventually anyway)
With every line, she encourages (demands?) that we do everything in this life, even the things that hurt and are hard. Why? Because they all have something to teach us. Maybe especially the hard things. What’s more, she also reminds us we don’t have to be all adult or intellectual or careful about it: just jump in like a three-year-old and melt it all down along the way. Man, that is so freeing.
Those same lyrics are also fantastic instructions for engaging with this show. You’re going to feel a lot of things as you experience this show – I think I speak for the entire cast and team when I say I know we certainly did as we were putting it together for you. The topics covered here are hard and fun and messy and joyful and heartbreaking, but they’re all important to feel. Why? Because they have so much to teach us about ourselves, about each other, about our community.
So don’t resist the feels today: laugh, cry, cringe, yell, do whatever you need to. Like Alanis said: You’re gonna have to eventually anyway.
Drew Whitley, Director
Meet the Cast
Bess Bergin (Ensemble) is so excited to be in her 7th show at Market Theatre! She’s played Mary Delgado in Jersey Boys and Spiker in James and the Giant Peach, one of Audrey Two’s puppeteers in Little Shop of Horrors, and she participated in her first 24 Hour Musical, playing Mrs. Perkins in Annie! In all of her 16 years of theatre experience, Jagged Little Pill was definitely the hardest show she’s ever been a part of. This is mainly for its heavy messages and topics, but she’s also very honored to be trusted by the production team to help tell this story! Bess would like to thank her fellow cast members, her friends, and her family for their endless support!
Mikie Brown (Ensemble) is excited to be making his first full production debut at Market Theatre! Although this is his first official show here, Mikie has previously worked with Market as part of our summer camp staff and has worked crew for several of our 24 Hour Musicals. He’s thrilled to be part of a mainstage production and grateful to be working alongside such a talented cast and crew. While Mikie loves Alanis Morissette’s music, his favorite musical is Little Shop of Horrors.
Jessica Candid (Ensemble) is so jazzed to be back at Market (inside the theatre this time!) after having previously performed in two of Market’s outdoor park shows (The Comedy of Errors and James and the Giant Peach). Other favorite credits include Click, Clack, Boo at SCCT and The Thanksgiving Play at Clemson University, where she earned a BA in Performing Arts. Outside of theatre, Jessica works as a biomedical engineer and enjoys reading, traveling, and playing with her cat, Mittens.
Simone Cheek (Frankie Healy) is honored to be in her 4th production at The Market Theater! She is currently a 12th grader at T.L Hanna High School. You may have seen her in multiple productions around Anderson. Some of her most memorable roles include Legally Blonde, Jr. and Elf at Project Challenge Playhouse, 13!, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Little Shop of Horrors at The Market Theater, and Anastasia at Southwood Academy of the Arts. She hopes you enjoy this fantastic show!
Beonka Edwards (Ensemble) is ready to sing and dance her patootie off in this raw and real production! Her recent credits include Puffs here at Market Theatre, The Little Mermaid at Carolina Wren Park, and 24 Hour Musical at Anderson University. He has been working on and off backstage at Market over the last few years and is excited to be returning to the stage! He is a recent graduate of Western Carolina University with a BFA in Acting! While he has enjoyed learning about this musical, his favorite is actually Pippin! He hopes everyone enjoys the show!
