August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Audition Date: Sunday, December 15, 2024

Time: 5:00 - 8:00 pm (seen in order of arrival)

Location: Market Theatre Studio (at the Anderson Arts Center, 110 Federal Street)

Prepare: 60-90 second dramatic monologue, preferably from an August Wilson play (monologues from other plays are still welcomed & accepted)

Bring: All conflicts for rehearsals; you may upload a headshot and/or resume below or at auditions

Show Dates: February 14-24, 2025 (Fri, Sat, Sun, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon)

Rehearsal Dates & Times: First rehearsal - near January 2 with possible December read-through; rehearsals normally 4 week days from 6:30-9:30 pm with occasional weekend rehearsals based on actors’ schedules

Callbacks: If needed, Tuesday, 12/17 or Wednesday, 12/18

*Note: If auditioning for both Ma Rainey & tick, tick… we will see both your monologue and song at the same time

Prepare: 60-90 second cut of a song, preferably in the musical theatre rock style of the show (other songs are still welcomed & accepted); accompanist provided or you may bring backing tracks on your phone

Bring: All conflicts for rehearsals; you may upload a headshot and/or resume below or at auditions

Show Dates: March 14-24, 2025 (Fri, Sat, Sun, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon)

Rehearsal Dates & Times: First rehearsal - near January 20; rehearsals normally 4 week days from 6:30-9:30 pm with occasional weekend rehearsals based on actors’ schedules

Audition Deadline: Saturday, November 30 at 11:59 pm

Tour Dates: February 5 - March 28 (Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday mornings; all shows wrapped by 12:00 pm)

Tour Stipends: $250 for rehearsal period; $50/performance + $25/any show performed outside of Anderson County

Prepare: One of the provided sides below; monologue does not need to be memorized, though it may be if you wish. (Optional: you may also submit a separate monologue of your choosing from any Theatre for Youth play in addition to the provided side. This is NOT required.)

Special Notes:

  • 15 tour stops guaranteed; 24 tour stops possible

  • Actors should be at least 18 years old.

    • Auditions from teenage actors under the age of 18 will be accepted, but adult actors will be given priority consideration.

    • Actors under age 18 should only audition if they have a flexible school schedule and reliable transportation.

  • Actor must have reliable transportation; no additional gas stipend provided

  • Actor must be able to comfortably lift 10-20 pounds as actors will be assisting in loading in and loading out show at tour stops
