Moment work reinvents the way theatre is made—the way we bring text, movement, character, and design together.
Unbound your creativity as we dive into Moment Work, a unique approach to theatre-making pioneered by the notable Tectonic Theatre Project. You’ll explore a new theatre-making mindset, and take away some tools that you can use in any future rehearsal process. Developed by New York City’s Tectonic Theatre Project, creators of groundbreaking productions including The Laramie Project, 33 Variations, and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, Moment Work is a system for devising new works and unlocking existing texts that puts theatre makers, from actors and directors to designers and writers, all on an even playing field. Moment work is a theatrical language for creating. Join us as we extensively explore elements of the stage, from the concrete of light and sound to the conceptional of transformation and surprise, and how these things can be used creatively by you as an actor.
Drew Whitley, Market Theatre’s Outreach & Education Director, has had the privilege of studying with members of the Tectonic Theatre Project and is excited to share this new method for creating with you. In addition to his role with the Market, Drew is the theatre teacher a D. W. Daniel High School in Central, SC. He was recently named 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year for the school. He has performed in and directed more than 60 productions at theaters across the Upstate including Market Theatre, Warehouse Theatre, Mill Town Players, Centre Stage, Electric City Playhouse, and Clemson University. At The Market, he has directed Death of a Salesman, Footloose for the 2019 24 Hour Musical, and the award-winning The 39 Steps. Additionally, he has served as the theatre instructor for the Anderson Five Arts Consortium for the past three summers. He holds two bachelors degrees from Clemson University, one in Secondary Education and one in English Literature, as well as a minor in Theatre. Later this season, he will direct our production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
