Statement from Market Theatre on Reopening Considerations
The Market Theatre Company of Anderson is dedicated to creating exceptional theatrical experiences while maintaining an uncompromising commitment to public health and safety. The safety of our actors, staff, and audience is our highest priority.

As of August 3, 2020, Governor Henry McMaster is allowing theatres to reopen at 50% capacity or with a maximum occupancy of 200. After exploring many options, Market Theatre staff and board of directors have agreed that there is currently no way to safely conduct effective rehearsals or viable performances without jeopardizing the health and safety of those involved. We plan to continue producing theatre only when such a decision is supported by local health statistics, public officials, and industry leaders (and no sooner).
The Market team values our Upstate theatre community and the leadership dedicated to its health, safety and success during this time of uncertainty. We stand with, and support area theatres making the diffcult decisions to move with caution and safety at the forefront. We recognize that these are not easy calls to make, but ones that we must make for the safety of everyone involved. As the effects of COVID-19 are rapidly changing and impacting each community uniquely, we will take an individualized and fluid approach to formulating a reopening plan that is uniquely tailored to Market Theatre and the Anderson community. Future decisions will be made based upon local case numbers, hospital occupancy, local policies, new/developing industry research, and unique demographics that may differ from our neighboring communities.
The Market’s season remains postponed until further notice. Currently, we are forming a committee that will focus on creative solutions that support exceptional theatre experiences that do not require organized gatherings. Performances set outdoors and in alternative spaces will be explored as soon as those options are deemed safe. As always, updates will be posted on our website and social media platforms.
